The Ardèche Region, called after its most impressive river, is situated in the South-East of France, near the valley of the river Rhône with its famous wines. The Mediterranean is just a three-hour-car-ride away – a pleasant trip right across one of the country’s most lovely landscapes, the Provence. Lyons (international airport), after Paris the biggest French city, can be reached in two hours by car.

The rivers of the region offer lots of opportunity for water sports: swimming, fishing, canoeing, whitewater rafting.

The region is a true paradise for mountainbikers, horse riders, mountain climbers and hikers. Just recently, a network of hiking trails across the most beautiful landscapes has been created. As for motor bikers, they will truly enjoy the small, empty regional roads winding along mountains and gorges. And for winter guests, there is a big skiing area just 14 km away.

Those guests who love “la France” will find here what they have always dreamt of: In picturesque places like Balazuc and Largentière time seems to have come to a standstill; on the weekly markets one can take pleasure in trying  the sausages and cheeses made by the peasants of the area; during the summer, “fêtes de la ville” and charming little festivals with theatre and music take place all around the region; the tiny village restaurants haven’t been conquered by microwave ovens yet; and literally everywhere, people play “boules” in the afternoon on shaded village squares.

The Southern reaches of the river Ardèche are one of the most spectacular natural wonders of France: The river has dug deep, winding canyons into the surrounding limestone plateau. The “Gorges de l’Ardèche”, are popular attractions for tourists travelling by car and canoe fans.

Whereas the South of the region is already “in” on a national as well as international level, the Northern part of the Ardèche is a true “next hot” region that is just about to be discovered thanks to new and fast train connections and motorways. The travellers who explore the region in steadily growing numbers discover the many faces of a sleeping beauty.

Spreading on just a few square kilometres, one can find a rich diversity of landscapes: vast limestone plateaus with sparse vegetation as well as fertile river valleys whose slopes are lined by terraces built in former centuries to grow chestnuts; picturesque rock formations, and once and again steep slopes dug even by small rivers into the soft limestone ground. This intact natural environment crossed just by a couple of roads and lanes is a true paradise for wild boar – as is mirrored in the fantastic regional recipes for wild boar dishes.
